Excellent first post.
I especially loved the expression that JWs have been on a "130+ year snipe hunt".

hi everyone, i would like to introduce myself and tell my story.
from the standpoint of being one of jehovahs witnesses, my whole family is deeply involved as i was the 5th generation of witness and any children that my brothers or sister have will be the sixth generation.
as some of my brothers and sisters are grandparents, i guess that makes their grandchildren a potential 7th generation.
Excellent first post.

it's 9:30 on a saturday night.
no desserts to be found anywhere in the open mind household.
cvs drug/variety store is open 'til 10 pm.
Band on the Run: Great church story!
Now on to "boob"-gate.
The cashier was an 18ish, butch-looking young lady with somewhat form-fitting clothes but not uber-provocative. I always try to appy the wisdom of Seinfeld when it comes to cleavage on public display.
"Cleavage is like the sun. A quick glance, then look away!"
What was bizarre was that given the social tabboo of staring at cleavage, out of the blue this young lady was pointedly gesturing downwards with her hand towards her bosom. It took about 1 second for me to go from "WTH?" to "DOH!!" Hide the pooch!!

"i was able to get my wife and children out, and this led to my son-in-law and a close friend leaving at the same time.
so, i am among the more fortunate in that my immediate family, and non-jw friends and relatives were all there with me as i exited.
Yep. Amazing's strategy has worked for some who were fortunate enough to have elder status when they awakened.

It's 9:30 on a Saturday night. No desserts to be found anywhere in the Open Mind household. CVS drug/variety store is open 'til 10 pm. Open Mind Jr. wants ice cream and our little doggie needs a walk. So my teen-age son, our hyper-cute dog and myself decide to hoof it on down to CVS for some ice cream.
Here was Plan A: OM gives $ to son. Son goes inside store to buy dairy delights while OM observes California Health Codes by waiting outside with the filthy canine carrier of Ebola, HIV, Typhoid, etc.
60 seconds go by. Screw it. Let's take a walk on the wild side and bring the beast inside.
I stuff the little guy inside my jacket out of sight and walk in. I'm a fairly respectable looking middle-aged guy and the young lady at the cash register is probably all of 18 years old. There are a couple customers waiting to be rung out.
Register Girl: (In a VERY accusatory, commanding tone.) "Do you have a dog in there?"
OM: (Long pause) "Yes."
The customers eyes are now locked on this clash of 18-year old authority vs. middle aged scoff-law.
Register Girl: "Is he cute?"
OM: "Yes."
(OM's son is now approaching with a carton of ice cream)
Register Girl: "Can I see him?"
OM" "Yes."
(Out pops a canine head of extreme adorableness and excessive fawning ensues on the part of Register Girl and customers.)
All of a sudden Register Girl starts pushing her hand down towards her boobs. OM is dumbfounded for about 1 second. Ahhh, Mr. Manager is on his way to the front of the store. Winks are exchanged between Register Girl & OM. Pooch gets pushed down and OM scoots outside while teen-age son completes transaction.
Wild times on a Saturday Night.

i am very proud that we have been together for 10 years!
being raised a jw, it was always hard for me to find a long term relationship.
most people that i met weren't interested in anything long term, and each time one ended, it left me feeling like i would never find someone who shared the same feelings.
Congratulations ohiocowboy & Dave!!!!
It looks like Ohio will give the green light to same-sex marriage before California (my state) does.
As my gay brother says, "Gay people should have the right to be miserable just like everyone else!" (joke)
Wishing you much happiness in the years ahead.

the letter leaked today on "confidentiality" had an infurating set of paragraphs on suicides, attempted suicides, and threatened suicides.
here is the excerpt.. suicides and attempted or threatened suicides.
20. at times, judicial committees may deal with someone who is so distraught that he attempts.

i have been on this site daily, almost from its beginning, since i left the jws in 2001, but i have been more of a reader than a poster, as you can see from my post count.
i know few here know me, although i know many of you through reading your posts.
maybe it is not right to ask for support, when i generally stay quietly in the background of this forum, but i want only to speak a human misery of the deepest kind.
My heart goes out to you Truman. Wishing you strength and (eventual) peace.

yeah in the section on attending the convention, you will find this gem:.
"therefore, we should give attention to our dress and grooming while in the convention city, including when we check in at the hotel.
arriving in shorts and a t-shirt would not reflect dignity.".
Thanks for bringing this to light.
Princes Leia to Governor Tarkin the GB: "The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."
I'm going to make sure to remind JW relatives of this new requirement "suggestion" and see how well it is being received. Unfortunately for us, most of our relatives live close enough to DC sites to be able to commute daily.

Hey if OUTLAW doesn't show up soon, stuff like this might start popping up around here:
Ewwwwwww.
C'mon back OUTLAW.

as some of you know, i am employed as master of whisky for seattle (pac nw).
i represent diageo n america's whisk(e)y portfolio.. this includes: johnnie walker, the classic malts of scotland, bushmills irish whiskey, crown royal, bulleit bourbon and rye whiskey, george dickel tennessee whisky, and bucchanan's blended scotch whisky.. my job basically involves speaking publicly about the whiskies, hosting and presenting whisk(e)y tastings and dinners, and educating bar & restaurant staff about whisk(e)y. tough gig, i know.. my mow bio & pic can be found on crown royal's website here: http://www.crownroyal.com/west-masters/breck-taylor.
i was thinking about putting a featured whisky of the week up here every friday.
Fantastic thread LKL.
My wife and I began our whisky(ey) education about a year ago.
Laphroig, Ardbeg, Bushmills (12 yr) & Bulleit Bourbon are the only ones here that I know we've tried.
For any JWs who would like to smoke a cigar without risking a Judicial Committee, try the Laphroig. It's a campfire in a glass.
Thanks again Low-Key.
